Some of you might be wondering what is Providence Books & Press?…

Three years ago Providence Books & Press started with two or three bookshelves, a handful of books, a dream, and prayer. We had big dreams but few books to sell. Our goal wasn’t just to sell books, but also to try get more Christians engaged with their faith. I guess you could say we had a lot of big visions, but no idea how to carry them out.

Fast forward to today, and we still have a lot of big visions and still not much idea how we are going to carry them out! Yet, things have changed at Providence Books & Press; we have become a non-profit company, our inventory has grown to over 700 different titles, and the biggest change of all, we have been blessed with the opportunity to publish. We were blessed by @reformedperspective with the opportunity to take over the former Reformed Perspective Press, as well as the study (formerly ILPB). This has been a very exciting opportunity for us, but also a very steep learning curve!

To sum it up at this point Providence Books & Press is a small but growing non-profit Christian bookseller and book-publisher located close to Barrhead, Alberta. We don’t know what God’s will for Providence Books & Press will be, but we hope you will join us for the journey!

This is one of the most profound and pastoral books I have read about the issue of sexual sin. Many of the evangelical books I have read on this topic speak repeatedly about the things we have to do and too little about what Christ has done for us. Now there certainly is something we have to do about it, but we can only do it through Christ. The only hope we have is to cling to him, and what a hope that is! Strange New World is essentially a rewritten, condensed version of Trueman's earlier book, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self.
We are currently studying this book in a local book study and have found it to be more than worth our time. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to more fully understand our times.

Interested in learning more about the Puritans?
Following God Fully is a great place to start. If you
are like myself, you would have grown up thinking
the Puritans were a sour lot, a pharisaical bunch
whose greatest burning desire was to stamp out
everyone else's fun.

Joel Beeke and Michael Reeves paint a very
different picture in Following God Fully. Contrary to popular opinion, they were not always scowling and not always dressed in black, as their portraits seem to suggest. Because black was the formal colour of the time, they were always photographed wearing it. It appears, though, that one could have found them wearing any colour of the rainbow on days other than the Lord's day. While the Puritans
certainly had much to say about the excess and
misuse of gifts, they were not miserable scrooges.

After explaining some of the general historical
background of the Puritans and explaining why long dead scholars have any particular relevance to us"new age thinkers" today, Beeke and Reeves move into short biographical sketches of some of the main figures of the Puritan movement. They begin with the "Father" of Puritanism, William Perkins, and briefly touch on several others, such as Richard Sibbes, Thomas Goodwin, John Eliot, John Owen,John Bunyan, John Flavel, Matthew Henry, and end with Jonathan Edwards, who some call the last Puritan.

Providence Books & Press started out as a small, family-owned bookstore in 2021. We have since become a non-profit in order to expand our reach and to continue our original vision of nurturing and cultivating the love and growth of the gospel.

We have been graciously bestowed with two former publishing houses, RP Press and The Study (formerly ILPB). With this opportunity, we plan to expand from solely bookselling to begin book publishing.

Literature can never replace God’s ordained method of working faith—the true preaching of the gospel—but we believe it is a vital, even necessary, companion to preaching. It is this idea that formulates what we envision Providence Books & Press becoming.
